Although it is not essential to purchase a lot of kit in order to take part in a dig, certain items are necessary or highly recommended for insurance and health and safety reasons. Other items can just make life easier!

Must have:
- Steel toe and mid-sole boots*
Highly recommended:
- W.H.S. 4" pointing trowel
- Hi-vis jacket*
- Hard hat*
- Garden kneeler or knee pads
- Especially in hot weather:
- Suntan lotion
- Water

- 4H Pencil
- Rubber

- 6" nails*
- Plastic tool box
- Compass
- Line level

Clothes
- Comfortable jeans/combats, which will allow easy bending, kneeling, etc.
- Gardening gloves
- Water-proofs
