Gosford Books (August 2007)
Gosford Street is known to have been a medieval suburb of Coventry so the opportunity to dig at Gosford Books was welcomed by the Society. The excavation revealed a medieval stone lined pit. Although the original use has not yet been identified, the finds indicated the presence of metal working. The pit had also been re-used as a cess pit, a factor which featured prominently in an article in the Coventry Telegraph on the 10 August 2007 [Link to the article]
Processing of the finds will commence over the next few months.
Broadwell
Broadwell is an ongoing investigation of a Romano-British D-shaped enclosure, which became evident through aerial photography, as shown below. CADAS have been visiting this site since 1997, and have carried out two excavations on the enclosure ditch, but have found no concrete evidence for its use. It is really too small for an animal or habitation enclosure, but may possibly be a shrine site.
Fieldwalking has produced a large amount of 2nd/3rd Century pottery sherds, as well as a number of Roman coins which are also dated 2nd/3rd Century. We have now ascertained that the pottery extends into other fields surrounding the enclosure site, which indicates that there must have been a fairly large habitation in the immediate vicinity, or a lengthy period of occupation.
Unfortunately we have been unable to pinpoint any habitation site, so far, although if the building had been wooden it would be extremely unlikely that there will be anything to find, other than soil stains to show where the buildings stood. But even these could have been ploughed out.
We will however keep looking.
Why not join the society; it could be you who finds the habitation site.
