CADAS - CHEP Launch Event

2009

CHEP Landscape Talk, by George Demidowicz

When: Saturday 31st January, 10:00 - 12:00 noon
Where: The Council House, Earl Street, in Diamond Room 2
The talk will consist of an overview of landscape history, with particular reference to Coventry, and considering both archaeological and historical evidence. There will be an opportunity to look at historic maps of Coventry and to discuss how to interpret and use cartographic sources when carrying out research. There will be a short break around 11.00am but refreshments will not be provided.

CHEP Aerial Photography

When: Sunday 22nd March, 10:00 - approx. 15:00
Where: Old Blue Coat School, 5a Priory Road CV1 5EX.
In the morning, there will be a talk about different types of aerial photography and how aerial photographs are used. In the afternoon there will be an opportunity to look more closely at some aerial photographs of the Allesley and Keresley areas.
The event is free but refreshments will not be provided. There will be morning and afternoon breaks so it is suggested attendees bring sufficient drinks and also a packed lunch.

CHEP Pot Recognition

When: Saturday 13th June, 13:00 - 16:00
Where: Allesley Village Hall
A talk on pottery recognition, by Ian Soden, using examples from the Gosford Books excavation.

CHEP Flint Recognition

When: Saturday 20th June, 10:00 - approx 16:00
In the morning there will be a talk about flint recognition, which will be particularly useful for field walkers. There will also be an introduction to further research topics such as raw material sourcing and behavioural studies. In the afternoon there will be an opportunity to have a go at flint drawing and to handle flints.

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike other CHEP activities, numbers are restricted to 25 people for this workshop. This is to ensure that every participant has a good opportunity to look at and handle the flints. If more than 25 people wish to attend, another workshop will be arranged for later in the year. Contact Eloise to reserve your place.

CHEP Coventry Pot Recognition

When: Originally planned for Saturday 22nd August, re-scheduled for Saturday 10th October, 13:00 - 15:00
Where: The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum
Paul Blinkhorn, the pottery expert on TimeTeam, will be giving a talk on pottery with particular reference to examples of Coventry pottery dating from the Saxon period to late Medieval. The talk will be based on examples of pottery from the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum collection which will be taken out of the collection for the audience to look at during the talk. There will be a break for tea, but refreshments will not be provided. The lecture is free to attend and will be particularly useful for people with an interest in field walking and excavation.

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike most other CHEP activities, numbers are restricted to 50 people for this workshop. Please contact Eloise in order to reserve your place. Reservations will be made on a first come, first served, basis.

2010

CHEP Woodlands Archaeology

When: Saturday 9th January 2010, 10:00
Where: Coventry Colliery Sports and Social Club.
There will be a talk in the morning from 10.00 to 12.00 with a break in the middle. After lunch we will go for a walk around Bunson's Woods. You will need to bring a packed lunch, but drinks will be available from the colliery club bar. This workshop is a repeat of the woodland's workshop that took place in December 2008 owing to the positive feedback it received. There is no restriction on attendance for this workshop, but please let Eloise know if you intend to take part since further details will be sent out to participants on Tuesday 5th January.

CHEP Basic Measured Survey

When: Saturday 6th February 2010, 10:00 - about 3:00
Where: Contact Eloise for details.
Paul Mason will be conducting a workshop on basic measured survey. This will involve a talk in the morning about the principles of surveying and a demonstration of using a total station. In the afternoon participants will be divided into two groups. Paul's group will be learning to measure distances and drawing profiles, while Eloise's group will be using CADAS's new resistivity meter. The groups will then swap round.

PLEASE NOTE: The workshop is restricted to 20 participants; however, if more people show an interest in attending, then the workshop will be repeated at a later date.

CHEP Farm Buildings in Warwickshire

When: Saturday 10th April 2010, 10:00
Where: the Church Hall, Hawkes Mill Lane
Jeremy Lake, an Inspector for English Heritage will be giving a talk on farm buildings. The talk will finish by lunch time (with a mid-morning break, although refreshments will not be provided). In the afternoon there will be a tour of the outside of a farm building. There is no limit on attendance for this activity, but please contact Eloise if you plan to attend so that she can anticipate numbers and send you a location map, if necessary.
